Forest Immersion

Five days of shinrin-yoku, tea, and the Kyoto forest

In Japan, forest bathing is prescribed by physicians and covered by employers. It takes most Western guests two days to stop treating it as a walk.

The retreat

What happens here

Forest Immersion is built on shinrin-yoku — forest bathing — the Japanese clinical practice of slow, sensory time among trees, shown to lower cortisol and blood pressure within two hours. But the retreat's real subject is attention: what happens when it is trained gently, through ritual, for five days.

Based in a machiya house at the edge of Arashiyama's cedar forest, days move between guided forest walks, tea ceremony, calligraphy, and kaiseki-inspired meals. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is loud. The precision is the luxury.

Day by day

The shape of the days

A retreat is a piece of time-architecture. Here is exactly how yours is built.

Day 01

Arrival & the House

Arrive from Osaka by private transfer. The house introduces itself slowly — tea on the engawa, a garden tour, and the first evening meal, eaten in near silence by design.

  • 15:00Arrival, tea on the engawa
  • 17:00Garden orientation
  • 19:00First kaiseki dinner

Day 02

First Immersion

The dawn bamboo walk before the town wakes, then the first full shinrin-yoku session with our forest guide — two hours covering perhaps eight hundred metres. Afternoon: the first tea ceremony.

  • 05:30Dawn bamboo grove walk
  • 09:00Shinrin-yoku — first immersion
  • 14:00Tea ceremony with the tea master
  • 18:30Onsen bath & dinner

Day 03

Mountain Temple

A morning climb to a working mountain temple for zazen with the monks, a shōjin ryōri temple lunch, and an afternoon of calligraphy — attention narrowed to a single brushstroke.

  • 06:30Temple climb & zazen
  • 12:00Shōjin ryōri temple lunch
  • 15:00Calligraphy — one character, all afternoon

Day 04

The River & The Craft

Morning on the Hozu river gorge by traditional boat, an afternoon with a Kyoto craftsman — indigo dyeing or woodwork — and the final evening's full kaiseki with sake pairing.

  • 08:00Hozu gorge by boat
  • 14:00Craft session — indigo or wood
  • 19:00Full kaiseki with sake pairing

Day 05

Last Walk & Departure

A final unguided forest hour — the test of whether the practice is now yours — then breakfast and departure with a seasonal practice calendar for wherever you live.

  • 06:00Solo forest hour
  • 08:30Breakfast & practice calendar
  • 11:00Departure transfers
What you take home

The lasting part

Cortisol, measurably down

Shinrin-yoku's effects are among the best-replicated in wellness science: lower cortisol, lower blood pressure, improved immune markers.

Attention as a craft

Tea, calligraphy, and forest practice train the same faculty from three directions. Guests describe the effect as 'mental quiet with edges.'

Ritual you can carry

You leave with a seasonal practice calendar — small, precise rituals matched to your own climate and city.

Forest House
Where you stay

Forest House

The Forest House is a restored machiya at the cedar line — tatami, shoji, hinoki wood and paper light. Its rooms follow the traditional sequence from street to garden, ending in an engawa veranda that faces the forest and nothing else.
