Desert Stillness

Four days of silence in the stone desert

Guests consistently report the same sequence: day one is restless, day two is uncomfortable, and day three is unlike anything they can describe.

The retreat

What happens here

Desert Stillness is the simplest thing SOMA offers, and for many guests the most profound: four days in the Agafay stone desert, three of them in complete silence. No phone, no reading, no journaling for the middle days. Just instruction, food, landscape, and your own attention.

The structure is monastic but the comfort is not — private rammed-earth pavilions, a hammam under the stars, and Moroccan cooking of real depth, taken together in silence at a long candlelit table.

The shape of the days

A retreat is a piece of time-architecture. Here is exactly how yours is built.

Day 01

Arrival & Last Words

Arrive from Marrakech in the late afternoon. Orientation, a silence briefing, phones into the safe, and a final spoken dinner. Silence begins at 21:00 with the night sit.

  • 16:00Arrival & orientation
  • 18:00Silence briefing & phone ritual
  • 19:00Last spoken dinner
  • 21:00Silence begins — first night sit

Day 02

First Full Silence

Sits alternate with slow desert walks. Instruction comes in whispers, one-to-one. The mind is loud today; that is expected and explained in advance.

  • 06:00Dawn sit — 45 minutes
  • 08:00Silent breakfast
  • 10:00Walking meditation — the long wadi
  • 17:00Hammam & rest
  • 20:30Night sit under the stars

Day 03

The Deep Day

The longest sits of the retreat, a solo half-day at a private spot in the hills with water and shade, and the full two-hour night sit under the Milky Way.

  • 06:00Dawn sit — 60 minutes
  • 09:00Solo half-day in the hills
  • 16:00Return, hammam, rest
  • 21:00The night sit — two hours

Day 04

Emergence

Silence ends at breakfast, gently. A closing circle, an integration session on keeping stillness in a speaking life, and the drive back to Marrakech by early afternoon.

  • 06:00Final dawn sit
  • 08:00Silence ends — spoken breakfast
  • 10:00Integration circle
  • 13:00Return to Marrakech
What you take home

The lasting part

A genuine reset of attention

Three days of silence does what no weekend of 'unplugging' can — the attentional system fully de-loads, often for the first time in years.

Meditation that finally lands

With nothing competing, instruction takes. Guests routinely sustain sits at home that they could never establish before.

Proof you can

The knowledge that you can be alone and quiet for three days changes a person's relationship with every notification thereafter.

Earth Pavilion
Where you stay

Earth Pavilion

Nine Earth Pavilions stand apart from one another across the camp's low hill, each built by Marrakech craftsmen from rammed earth, palm wood and canvas. The walls hold the day's heat for the cold desert night; the roof opens over the bed for sleeping under stars.
