Alpine Clarity

Nietzsche walked this valley daily and claimed it doubled his output. We make no such promise. We simply note that he stayed seven summers.

The retreat

What happens here

Alpine Clarity is SOMA's most demanding retreat, built for people whose work is thinking and who want the machinery serviced. The tools are old and severe: altitude, cold water, long fasted walks, and structured breathwork.

Five days at 1,800 metres in the Engadin — glacial lake below, larch forest around, no town in sight. Mornings alternate lake immersion with fire sauna. Afternoons are for deep work on whatever you carry with you, or for nothing. Evenings are early, and the sleep here is famous.

Day by day

The shape of the days

A retreat is a piece of time-architecture. Here is exactly how yours is built.

Day 01

Altitude & Baseline

Arrive by rail through the Albula pass. Cognitive and cardiovascular baseline testing, an acclimatisation walk, and the first fire-sauna evening.

  • 14:00Arrival via Albula railway
  • 16:00Baseline: cognition, VO₂, HRV
  • 18:00First sauna & river plunge

Day 02

First Immersion

The centrepiece protocol begins: three minutes in the 6°C lake at dawn, fire sauna, then a fasted ridge walk with a breath instructor. Afternoon deep-work block in the library.

  • 06:30Lake immersion — 3 minutes, supervised
  • 07:00Fire sauna & breath down-regulation
  • 08:30Fasted ridge walk, 90 minutes
  • 14:00Deep work block — library, no devices
  • 19:00Alpine dinner: game, roots, dark bread

Day 03

The Long Walk

A full-day traverse to the Fex glacier valley — six hours of walking silence with a picnic of mountain cheese and pears. Attention behaves differently after four hours of walking. That is the experiment.

  • 06:30Lake immersion & sauna
  • 08:30Depart for Val Fex — walking silence
  • 12:30Glacier valley picnic
  • 16:00Return, restorative massage

Day 04

Cold Mastery

Immersion extends to five minutes with advanced breath protocol. An afternoon masterclass on deliberate cold — the physiology of noradrenaline, brown fat, and mood — followed by the week's chef's table.

  • 06:30Extended immersion — 5 minutes
  • 10:00Cold physiology masterclass
  • 15:00Deep work or valley ride
  • 19:00Chef's table with Engadin winemakers

Day 05

Retest & Departure

Cognitive retest against day one, a final immersion for those who want it, and a protocol for keeping cold and breath in a city life. The train down the valley leaves at noon.

  • 06:30Final immersion — optional, unhurried
  • 08:30Retest & results review
  • 10:30Home protocol design
  • 12:00Departure by rail
What you take home

The lasting part

Measured cognitive lift

Guests retest on day five with an average 14% improvement in sustained-attention scores against arrival.

Cold as a practice

You leave able to self-administer deliberate cold safely — the highest-leverage five minutes in stress physiology.

A week of real silence

No town, no traffic, no signal unless requested. The Engadin subtracts everything that fragments attention.

Alpine Loft
Where you stay

Alpine Loft

The Alpine Loft occupies the top floor of the Engadin lodge — a vaulted space of two-hundred-year-old larch beams, felt, stone and glass, with the lake six hundred metres below the window wall.
